It is a large, bushy, perennial herb with a thick, fleshy, juicy branched and spreading root. The plant is 1-1.6m high, cylindrical, smooth. Leaves numerous, alternate below, opposite above, one larger than other, short stalked. Fruit a berry. It is found in Central and Southern Europe. In India, it is cultivated in Kashmir.

It acts upon every part of the nervous system, producing active congestion, furious excitement, perverted special senses, twitching, convulsions and pain.
