An annual or biennial herb, it is also known as common celery. Stem up to 2.4 meter high, erect, branching. Radical leaves pinnate with deeply lobed segments, cauline 3-partite: segments once or twice trifid, coarsely toothed at the apex. Peduncle 6 mm or less. Umbel rays 5 to 10, pedicles 6 to 16. Flowers white, very small. Fruit 1-1.5 mm, ridges narrow, vittae broad. It is cultivated in India (particularly in Punjab and U.P.), Europe and U.S.A.It contains a soporific active principle. Reported to be analgesic for rheumatism. It is considered anticancer, antioxidant, anti-diabetic, antidepressant and anti-inflammatory. A homoeopathic tincture is made from the fruit. It is covered by Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia of India.A proving of tincture produced unpleasant feeling at stomach with belching, heartburn, spitting up of food, and gone feeling at pit of stomach lasting for hours which was partially relieved by eating. It is useful in obstinate retention of urine, throbbing headaches and heartburn. It is also covers swelling of throat, face, and hands. Rheumatic pain in muscles of neck and also of sacrum.
